JF: here is a video I helped put together for Jonathan Coulton’s Still Alive with Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara singing the lead!

Am I the only one who just saw this old photoshoot?

whatiloveaboutbeingqueer:

Whenever I am touring or doing readings, inevitably I get approached by Tegan and Sara fans who share touching stories about the ways TnS have moved them, helped them come out, changed their lives. I am always so heartened to hear these stories but never surprised because in so many ways they have done the same for me. They have consistently believed in me and supported my work, and for this I feel incredibly grateful.
But perhaps most importantly, by being fearless, outspoken, and persistent, especially in a world that is often telling queers that we don’t exist or shouldn’t exist, they are two of my greatest inspirations. Through them I have learnt that it’s possible for me to be all of me in everything I do and so much of what I love about being queer is embodied by them.
Needless to say, I am so thrilled to share what Sara Quin loves about being queer:
"What I love about being Queer is that its ME. It has helped define My Art, My Voice, My Aesthetic and My Politics. Being Queer has encouraged me to speak out and to stand up. It’s forced me to take an active role in the world around me and its pushed me to demand the same from others. It’s made me a Role Model. I love being Queer."
-Sara Quin (New York/Montreal)

zayrn:

there’s literally no point in teaching girls to be body positive if you only use men’s opinions for validation like “boys like girls with curves” nah get that the fuck out of here

Kokon to Zai orthopedic heels, as seen on I’M REVOLTING, photographs by Shop It Right Now. I am considering, among other things: the figure of the disabled body as a problematic metaphor; the eroticization of medical apparatus as well as the disabled body; phenomenological prosthetics that transform consciousness of self in the world; the blurring of the always precarious line between medical-surgical discourses of necessary utility and rehabilitation and “elective” aesthetics and beauty; clothing (and shoes) as armor against access and intimacy; Seoul’s pink parking spots designated for women in high heels; and finally, this quote from Rosemary Garland Thomson:

“Many parallels exist between the social meanings attributed to female bodies and those assigned to disabled bodies. Both the female body and the disabled body are cast within cultural discourse as deviant and inferior; both are excluded from full participation in public as well as economic life; both are defined in opposition to a valued norm which is assumed to possess natural corporeal superiority.”

Boxes are for squares. Don’t try to fit me in yours. I’m not that limited. You gain nothing and lose everything by trying to make people small.
